About "My Hands Came Away Red"

Within weeks of arriving in Indonesia on a mission trip, a young team witnesses religious conflicts flare up, with deadly results. The church building that the team had built is in ashes and they are stranded in a foreign land. One girl's quest to rediscover hope proves just as arduous as the journey home.

Cori signs up to take a mission trip to Indonesia during the summer after her senior year of high school. Inspired by happy visions of building churches and seeing beautiful beaches, she gladly escapes her complicated love life back home.

Five weeks after their arrival, a sectarian and religious conflict that has been simmering for years flames to life with deadly results on the nearby island of Ambon.  Within days, the church building the team had constructed is in ashes, its pastor and fifty villagers are dead, and the six terrified teenagers are stranded in the mountainous jungle with only the pastor's teenage son to guide them to safety. Ultimately, Cori's emotional quest to rediscover hope proves as arduous as the physical journey home.

Favourite Book
5 stars By Sara, 10 Jan 2013
This overtook all other books to become my favourite as soon as I read it.
It's just SO real. Having done missions myself before, there were so many aspects of what the narrator described that I could completely identify with. In fact, throughout it at some stages, I could have been there. It could have been me.
It made me think and examine how I responded to grief, and the craziness of this world. It made me cry, it expanded my mind, and my heart.
Still my favourite book. One that I have read over with a highlighter because of all the truths it spoke to me.

Gripping
5 stars By Elissa, 12 Nov 2007
Hard to put down! Begins as a nice happy missions trip adventure, becomes a frightening and sobering dose of what is reality for some, ends with ... well you will have to read it for yourself!! The author's style combines warmth and humor with the action, preventing this from becoming a difficult read. The narrative is written in first person by a thoroughly likable character who draws you into the team's experiences, giving you a shock when you surface, to realize you are not there with her.
