Virginia, daughter of a prominent physician, lived in a wealthy, idyllic world-a world of fanciful, romantic dreams. But her life is forever altered when the Great Depression sweeps across the country and into her community, bringing crippling unemployment, strikes, and frightening riots. Virginia follows her father into a whole new strata of society - one of hunger and poverty in a makeshift camp along the nearby railroad tracks, a place where men with no hope of work struggle with their families to survive. Giving medical aid and other assistance alongside her father, Virginia begins to learn the true lessons of life and discovers that the fantasies of youth rarely come true. She watches as the down-and-out people of "Soo City" rise above their dismal circumstances and display an uncommon spirit of generosity and love, ultimately bringing a much needed gift of hope to her family. And in reaching out to them, Virginia develops a strength of character and compassion that will change the direction of her future.
