This is an American revision of the original series edited by Alexander Roberts and Sir James Donaldson which was published in Edinburgh. The revision included: the addition of brief introductions and notes indicating variances in readings; specifying references to Scripture or literature; clarifying obscure passages and noting corruptions or distortions of patristic testimony. The ten volumes range from the Apostolic Fathers (St. Clement, Polycarp and Barnabas) to various third and fourth century sources including early liturgies and ancient Syriac documents. Volume IX contains a general index, including indexes to subjects and texts, compiled by Bernard Pick. There is also an extensive bibliographical synopsis by Ernest C. Richardson. Volume X is a supplement to the American edition by Allan Menzies and contains additions to early Christian literature discovered subsequent to the original edition plus portions of two of Origen's most important biblical commentaries. This is a mixed set of volumes by two different publishers, Eerdmans and Hendrickson. The contents are the same, but the covers will be different.
