Augustine of Hippo has had a towering and enduring influence both on Christianity and on Western civilization as a whole. His two best-known works, The City of God and Confessions are classics of world literature, and it is through his discussion of the Confessions that Stephen Cooper shows how many of Augustine's emotional and intellectual struggles are still with us today.

Stephen Cooper

Stephen A. Cooper, Ph.D. (Columbia University, NY) -- Professor Cooper teaches courses on the history of Christianity, including the New Testament, the early church, and the Protestant Reformation. His research has focused on the patristic interpretation of the Pauline letters and highlights the role of Greco-Roman philosophy and rhetoric in early Christian biblical exegesis. Cooper's most recent book is Marius Victorinus' Commentary on Galatians (Oxford: Oxford University Press). He is now engaged in a project with two other scholars to translate the first complete set of Latin commentaries on the Pauline epistles, written by the anonymous fourth-century exegete known as Ambrosiaster (to be published by E. J. Brill and the Society of Biblical Literature). He has also published Augustine for Armchair Theologians, with illustrations by Ron Hill (Louisville: Westminster John Knox) and Metaphysics and Morals: Marius Victornius' Commentary on the Letter to the Ephesians (Peter Lang).
