From the author:
"I became interested in Jane Austen as an undergraduate majoring in English. By the time I got to graduate school and had read through Pride and Prejudice twice, I was hooked. When it came time for a thesis, I had already been writing fiction for several years and was intrigued by Austen's style - especially her witty banter between her heroes and heroines. After thinking a while about what I should do my thesis on, I decided Jane Austen was the lady of the hour. So I wrote my thesis, concentrating on Austen's heroes in Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. The title of my thesis was Austen's Boys. After that, I thought for several years that I would enjoy retelling all of Austen's books. By the time I presented the idea to Harvest House Publishers, they were as thrilled with the idea as I was.
Adapting Austen's books for the Christian market has been an easy task. Jane Austen's father was a clergyman, and she wrote from a Christian worldview. Austen did what many great, Christian writers do. She created situations that involved moral issues and showed the characters who lived by Christian morals, those who did not, and the consequences of their choices. If you read her closely, you realise that many of her characters attend church and many of her heroes are clergymen. This was her comfort zone, of course, since her father was a clergyman and she was a regular church attendee. Given these facts, I can't say that I really adapted Austen for a Christian audience. What I have done is pulled out her already existing Christian themes and made them more clear for the contemporary reader." - Debra White Smith.
