PRODUCT DETAIL

Saint Augustine

Saint Augustine was born to a Catholic mother and a pagan father on November 13, 354, at Tagasta, near Algiers. He studied Latin literature and later taught rhetoric in Rome and Milan. He originally joined the Manicheans, a religious sect, but grew unhappy with some of their philosophies. He soon turned to Christianity and was baptized in 386. One of Augustine's major goals was a single, unified church. He was ordained a priest in 391 and appointed Bishop of Hippo, in Roman Africa, in 396, His writings and arguments with other sects include the Donatists and the Pelagians. On the Trinity, The City of God, and On Nature and Grace are some of his important writings. Confessions, which is considered his masterpiece, is an autobiographical work that recounts his restless youth and details the spiritual experiences that led him to Christianity. Many of Augustine's ideas, such as those concerning sin and predestination, became integral to the doctrines of the Church. Augustine died on August 28, 430AD.

Jonathan Edwards

Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) is widely acknowledged to be America's most important and original philosophical theologians. He is known as one of the greatest and most profound of American theologians and revivalists. He was the foremost leader of the Great Awakening in North America in the 18th Century. His writings continue to have a marked influence today on the life of the Church, his example stands as a beacon to guide us from the shallows of our low levels of spirituality to the deeper waters of life. Jonathan Edwards wrote such classics as Sinner in the Hands of an Angry God, Sermons of Jonathan Edwards and Call to United, Extraordinary Prayer.- Publisher.

Martin Luther

Martin Luther (1483 , 1546) was a German monk, a theologian and church reformer, he is considered to be the founder of Protestantism. Luther was a professor of Bible at the University of Wittenberg when he posted his famous 95 Theses (1517). In addition to writing many books, Luther translated the Bible into German. Luther believed that salvation was only by faith in Jesus , unmediated by the church. He challenged papal authority by emphasing the Bible as the only source of religious authority and believed the church to be a priesthood of all believers. These ideas helped to inspire the Protestant Reformation and changed the course of Western civilization. He married Katharina von Bora thus initiating the practice of clerical marriage within Protestantism.- Publisher.

John Bunyan

John Bunyan (1628-1688) was born in Elstow, England, and his life was spared twice in his early years, something he believed God had done for a special purpose. In November 1660, when Bunyan arrived to preach in the little town of Lower Samsell, he was informed that a warrant had been issued for his arrest. Unwilling to denounce his Christian faith and his calling to the ministry, he was imprisoned for twelve years.
Among the many writings he published during his imprisonment are The Holy City; Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners; and the most famous, The Pilgrims Progress.

After his release, he became the pastor of a church in Bedord, England and continued to write and publish stirring works that have endured through time. Among these classics are The Holy War; Bunyan's Visions of Heaven and Hell and Journey to Hell: The Life and Death of Mr. Badman.
