Purnell suggests that a lack of confidence in ministry has strain because people are not sure just what makes their conversations pastoral. He demonstrates and teaches particular skills in encourage confidence in pastoral leadership. In the early parts of the book, Purnell reflects on the nature of pastoral conversation, naming those things that make conversation pastoral. He then moves on to address what is happening in conversation and breaks these elements shown into particular components that people can practice to improve their capacity for confidently engaging intentional, deep, and pastoral conversation. The latest part of the book suggests questions for specific conversations that might assist people with thinking in a more focused and directed way about what their intentions are as they engage in such conversations.
