In 1974, after more than a hundred years in which the Methodist, Congregational and Presbyterian churches maintained separate educational institutions for their ministers, United Theological College came into existence, and New South Wales at last had a single united college. Born in a storm of controversy, the college brought an entirely new dimension to theological education in New South Wales.

In this book, marking the college's twenty-fifth anniversary, Geoffrey Barnes gives a detailed account of the events that led up to the formation of the college. He goes on to show how the college, during the past twenty-five years, has responded to a continually changing context in carrying out its role of preparing people for the ministry and providing theological leadership for the church.

His account of how this particular college has grappled with what it means to of theology in an Australia context will be of interest not only to those directly associated with the college but also to anyone interested in theological education and its place in Australian society.
