Thanks to his stellar contributions in linguistics and hermeneutics and to his singular advancements in Pauline exegesis, Moiss Silva has earned international acclaim from biblical scholars of all theological persuasions. In Explorations in Exegetical Method Silva combines his strengths in hermeneutics and Pauline studies to provide an impressive manual on exegetical method. This volume plows new ground by focusing on exegetical method using one of Paul's letters, thus enabling the method to be worked out in greater detail and with more consistency than is possible in a traditional textbook on exegesis. My primary purpose in this book is neither to provide a comprehensive treatment of any one topic . . . nor to come up with an interpretation of Galatians. . . . [However,] enough representative issues are treated . . . to help readers develop a strategy that they can apply to any other problem not included here. This book-length study also serves as prolegomenon to Silva's forthcoming Galatians commentary in the Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament. Presupposing one year of Greek, this manual combines readability with cutting-edge scholarship to produce a workable model for teaching exegesis. Although giving specific attention to the Pauline corpus, Silva offers exegetical principles that apply to the entire New Testament.
