In theology, just as in battle, some hills are worth dying on and others are not. But how do we know which ones? When should doctrine divide, and when should unity prevail? Just as a medic on a battlefield treats the severely wounded first and then moves on to the less serious injuries, we must prioritize doctrine in order of importance. Pastor Gavin Ortlund implores us to cultivate humility as we prioritize doctrine into four ranks-essential, urgent, important, and unimportant-so that we will be as effective as possible at advancing the gospel in our time.
Gavin Ortlund (PhD, Fuller Theological Seminary) is senior pastor at First Baptist Church of Ojai in Ojai, California. He was previously a research fellow for the Creation Project at the Carl F. H. Henry Center for Theological Understanding at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He is the author of Finding the Right Hills to Die On, Theological Retrieval for Evangelicals, and Anselm's Pursuit of Joy.
R. Albert Mohler Jr (Ph.D., Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is the Joseph Emerson Brown Professor of Christian Theology and President of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, one of the largest seminaries in the world. Dr. Mohler has been recognized by influential publications such as Time and Christianity Today as a leader among American evangelicals. In fact, Time.com called him the reigning intellectual of the evangelical movement in the U.S.
Dr. Mohler hosts a daily live nationwide radio program on the Salem Radio Network. He also writes a popular blog and a regular commentary on moral, cultural and theological issues. He is a frequent guest on national and international news outlets and is a popular preacher, teacher and lecturer. He is also the author of Cultural Shift: Engaging Current Issues with Eternal Truths; Preaching: The Centrality of Scripture and most recently The Disappearance Of God.
