"If you follow me, you're going to be surprised."

Big Bart, Tommo and Pip are threeguys on a three-year adventure, hanging out with Jesus, finding out what he's up to. Not exactly the best known of the twelve disciples, but they are on the edge of the action - out of the limelight, where there is plenty of partying, messing about and time to make an idiot of themselves. These are their adventures; stories you'll find in the Bible if you take a look. Well, sort of, because everything is just a little bit different when you're hanging out with Pip, Big Bart and Tommo...

Bob Hartman is a well-respected story teller who delights in bringing the Bible to life in fun and quirky ways so kids can understand and be engaged in the stories. In Hanging Out with Jesus, Bob looks at what following Jesus would have looked like from the disciples' perspective. Imagining three of the lesser known disciples,Philip, Bartholomew and Thomas, and told from the point of Pip, this is a fun take on what it might like to have been eye witnesses to Jesus' life.

"Jesus is not just our friend. He's our teacher too. We're supposed to be learning something here."

The premise is built on the idea that Pip, Tommo and Bart are more like grown up kids, which provides a way in for young readers to identify themselves in these characters and see, in their honest and questioning and confused and frightened and funny responses, the way that they themselves might respond to the things Jesus did. This was a deliberate choice as Bob saw that there were few resources for 8 -10 year olds to engage with the Bible, especially boys. So by introducing thestory of Jesus throughthe eyes of Pip, who gets into all sortsof capers, the stories are told in afun and adventure driven way that helps kids connect with the stories.

"As I characterised Jesus' relationship with the three main characters, I felt it was important to portray him with a twinkle in his eye, as if he was in on their jokes and sympathetic to their questions."

As the three mates see Jesus performing miracles and doing things they have not seen before, they slowly start to understand why Jesus is so special. Bob shares: "I hope it is an accurate reflection of the nature of the relationship between Jesus and his disciples and also an invitation for children to see their relationship to Jesus in that way - both Lordand friend."

Hanging out with Jesus encourages young readers to laugh out loud, be entertained, and ultimately learn about the life of Jesus.
