When big, rough, bubble-gum-chewing first baseman and heavy hitter Ben Green decides to go all out as a slugger with total disregard for strategy, the team turns against him. Its morale deteriorates, and championship hopes fly out the window. Chip is on the spot as his own ability as a hitter is challenged by the belligerent Green and a batting feud develops between the two men, as the team's standing slumps still further. In the climax of the story, Chip's after-hour efforts to tame the unruly Ben Green and teach him "inside" baseball pay off. Together they break a tie-score game that wins the conference championship for State.
