In this monograph, Anthony Lane uses cutting-edge scholarship to provide critical insights into the literary mechanics, contemporary context, and historical background of John Calvin's writing. John Calvin: Student of the Church Fathers is the culmination of Lane's thirty years of research and writing dedicated to John Calvin. Lane asserts that some scholars have made claims about Calvin's influences that are based on little or no evidence, so he develops and executes a methodology to examine these claims. Lane's methodology is a minimalist approach, not acknowledging that Calvin used or was influenced by another writer without strong evidence. As a result, he raises the threshold of evidence needed to determine who influenced Calvin. In some chapters, Lane examines how a certain person or group, such as Lippoman or the Greek Fathers, influenced all of Calvin's writings. Other chapters focus on determining influences in a representative work, such as Calvin's Genesis Commentary. This volume advances Calvin scholarship and ecclesiastical history. It is both a precise analysis of the influences on Calvin's writing and a concrete demonstration of the church fathers' legacy throughout the Reformation era. Many of the chapters have been well received as scholarly articles in the past, and they have been substantially reworked and updated for this volume. A comprehensive bibliography of modern works on Calvin and the church fathers is included.
