Francis Chan (born 1967) is the former founding pastor and teaching pastor of Cornerstone Community Church in Simi Valley, California. After being raised by his Buddhist grandmother in Hong Kong, Francis came to America at the age of five. His mother, stepmother and father all tragically died before his 13th birthday. Francis came to know the Lord in high school and in 1994 he and his wife Lisa started Cornerstone Community Church in Simi Valley. From just 30 original attendees, Cornerstone grew to 1,600 members by 2000. Francis stepped down from his role at Cornerstone in 2010 - by which time the church had 4,000 regular attendees. He believed God was calling him and his wife to take a 'step of faith' to launch a new ministry as an extension of Cornerstone Church, in a large city in America. Since 2011, Chan has concentrated his church planting efforts on San Francisco, where he has been involved in Abundant Life Christian Fellowship, a multiethnic, non-denominational evangelical church.
At Cornerstone Francis started up diverse and influential ministries including Cornerstone Television and Eternity Bible College (from 2004). He has been a highly sought-after speaker at many Christian colleges and youth conferences in the US and internationally. His commitment is to teach directly from the Bible and his passion is to see the next generation of American Christians display a much deeper love for Jesus.
Francis is committed to radical gospel-centred generosity in relation to his own finances. He gives away the majority of his income to charities, including the royalties from sales of his books and training resources. He is on the board of directors for Children's Hunger Fund and World Impact. Francis has used astute investments in restaurants and real estate to finance his own mission outreach efforts.
Francis is the best-selling author of several books, teaching DVDs and study guides. His book Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God has topped a million sales since its release in 2009, and all the proceeds are donated to charity. With an authentic message, a radical call to true faith and a dare to fall head over heels in love with God, Crazy Love's challenge has resonated in hearts of all ages.
Francis and his wife Lisa, have seven children, and live in San Francisco.
Louie Giglio was born 30 June 1958, and grew up in a Christian home in Atlanta, Georgia. He was an average college freshman at Georgia State University in 1977, that is, until one night, at 2 a.m., when he decided to devote his life to following Christ, not the college party life. He was inspired to be one of the first people to design a modern style of worship that is geared specifically toward young adults, with casual attire, expressive worship, and low-key, visually driven sermons.
Louie went on to earn a Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He and his wife Shelley started Choice Ministries, a Bible study at Baylor University that would become hugely popular among the student body. In 1995, when he moved back home to Atlanta, Georgia, due to his father's failing health, Louie founded a national gathering of Christian college students called the Passion Movement. From the first Passion Conference in Austin, Texas, in 1997, nearly a million university students have attended Passion-linked prayer, worship, and teaching events across the US, reaching a peak in the 17-city Passion Tour of 2008.
As part of the Passion Movement, Louie began a recording company, Sixsteps Records, which has signed and produced various Christian worship artists, such as David Crowder Band, Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, and Charlie Hall. He also started a Bible study movement, 7:22, aimed at single adults in the Atlanta area, which would attract thousands.
Louie has authored numerous popular books, including The Air I Breathe, I Am Not but I Know I Am, Indescribable, Passion, Wired: For a Life of Worship, Lost in Wonder, and The Comeback.
In 2008, Louie announced the planting of Passion City Church (PCC) in Atlanta, and was joined in the new venture by popular Christian recording artists Chris Tomlin and Matt Redman. Prior to this, Louie had attended North Point Community Church for 13 years, Louie and his wife Shelley make their home just outside of Atlanta.
Beth Moore was born Wanda Elizabeth Green in 1957, on an Army base in Green Bay, Wisconsin, the fourth of five children. She was raised in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, where her father - a retired army officer - managed the local cinema, and it was there that Beth's lifelong love for stories began. She loved to tell them, write them, and be told them. But the story that captured her heart more than any other was not told in a movie theatre. It was the story told in Sunday School, about Jesus, a Saviour who loved children and who thought she was special. A seed was planted in her young heart that would grow to a passionate love for Christ.
At the age of 18, Beth sensed God calling her to work for Him, although she couldn't yet imagine what that might involve. She graduated from Southwest Texas State University with a degree in political science, and would later receive an honorary doctorate in humanities from Howard Payne University. She married Keith Moore in 1978 and soon after the Lord added Amanda and Melissa to the family.
Beth's involvement with the Bible intensified when she took a doctrine class at her church. Her teacher was Buddy Walters, a former college football player who taught the Scriptures with tears streaming down his cheeks. She fervently prayed for such a passion for God's Word.
Beth founded Living Proof Ministries in 1994 with the purpose of teaching women how to love God's Word and put it at the centre of their lives. She has written numerous books - including Breaking Free, Believing God, The Patriarchs and James: Mercy Triumphs - that have been read by women of all ages, backgrounds, and denominations. Beth runs conferences for women across the United States annually, and has also taken her ministry to many different countries, including Ireland, England, Singapore, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, India, Angola, Kenya, and South Africa. Since 2004, Beth has conducted a radio ministry 'Living Proof with Beth Moore', and has a weekly spot on the television program LIFE Today. Ever the storyteller, Beth is known for enlivening her teaching with stories and poems written from the perspective of biblical characters. She communicates with great energy, humour, warmth, and grace.
For over a quarter of a century from the 1980s, Beth attended the First Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, transferring in 2011 to Bayou City Fellowship, where her son-in-law Curtis Jones is the founding pastor.
Beth and and her husband Keith enjoy travelling, hiking, drinking coffee on the back porch, eating Mexican food, making each other laugh, walking their dogs, and being grandparents. Both of their daughters, Amanda and Melissa, serve with Living Proof Ministries, and Amanda's husband, Curtis, serves on staff as an associate speaker/teacher.
John Stephen Piper was born 11 January 1946 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Bill and Ruth Piper. The Pipers soon moved to Greenville, South Carolina, where John spent his growing-up years. His father was an itinerant evangelist who also ministered through international radio and Bible courses. John has written a tribute to his mother, who died in 1974, in the booklet, What's the Difference (Crossway Books, 1990) which is also chapter one of the book, Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (Crossway Books, 1991).
At Wheaton College (1964-68), John majored in Literature and minored in Philosophy. Studying Romantic Literature with Clyde Kilby stimulated the poetic side of his nature and today he regularly writes poems to celebrate special family occasions and rich, biblical truths. At Wheaton John also met Noel Henry whom he married in 1968.
Following college, John completed a Bachelor of Divinity degree at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California (1968-71). While at Fuller, John discovered the writings of Jonathan Edwards.
John did his doctoral work in New Testament Studies at the University of Munich, Munich, West Germany (1971-74). His dissertation, Love Your Enemies, was published by Cambridge University Press and Baker Book House (and is now available through Crossway). Upon completion of his doctorate, he went on to teach Biblical Studies at Bethel College in St. Paul, Minnesota for six years (1974-80).
In 1980, sensing an irresistible call to preach, John became the senior pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he ministered for 33 years, until 2013. Together with his people, John was dedicated to spreading a passion for the supremacy of God in all things for the joy of all peoples through Jesus Christ - a mission he continues now for the wider church through the ministry of desiringGod.org. John says of his ministry:
"The ministry of preaching is the central labor of my life. My prayer is that through that ministry and everything else I do the great glory of our God and Savior Jesus Christ would be magnified as more and more people come to live out the obedience of faith more and more deeply."
John is the author of over 50 books and now frequently travels to speak, and writes regularly, through Desiring God.
John and Noel have four sons, a daughter, and twelve grandchildren.
