In little over a century since Federation, Australia has gone from a 98% professing Christian nation, to a mere 5% active churchgoers. Roy Williams traces the causes of this decline, and considers what the churches should do to reverse it in today's materialistic post-faith society.

At the time of Federation 98% of Australians identified themselves as Christians. Now only 5% regularly go to Church. The reasons for this steep decline in faith are broad - they include the failings of the Church itself; its relentless negativity and hypocrisy as well as misunderstandings about what belief entails. But is a post-faith society a good thing given that the alternative is often rampant materialism? This book will look at why and how mainstream religion fell off the radar and what the Church should/could do to redeem itself.

Roy Williams

One of Australia's emerging public intellectuals and writers, Roy Williams' distinguished 20-year career in the legal profession was cut short in 2004 when he experienced a life-changing illness. Forced to leave the law, he took time to recuperate before deciding to become a writer. His book reviews appear regularly in The Australian and The Sydney Morning Herald. He also contributes to Australian Literary Review, Dissent and Inside Sport, he recently authored God Actually.
