From their origination, the psalms have been the prayer book of the people of God. And since Christ's ascension to the right hand of God, the Christian faithful have found in their words promise, comfort, guidance, challenge, confession, absolution, and, of course, Christ. Martin Luther especially focused on the numerous ways the psalmists referred to Christ and the salvation He bringsour mighty Fortress, our Shepherd, our Light. Reading the Psalms with Luther helps a new generation of Christians use the Psalter in a devotional manner. Each psalm opens with a brief introduction from Luther, revealing his understanding of the Christ-centered message of the psalm and its model for Christian prayer. Each psalm is pointed so it may be pray through chanting, just as it has been for centuries. Following the psalm text is a short prayer. Includes the ESV translation of the Psalms; a suggested schedule for reading the Psalter.

Martin Luther loved the Psalter. This is noticeably evident in his short introductions to the psalms as he allows readers a glimpse into his theology and prayer life. Luther's writings demonstrate how he saw the Psalter as a Christ-centered model for Christian prayer. He classifies each psalm and applies the message of the text to the life lived under the cross. Using the text of the psalms from the English Standard Version, coupled with classic prayers, readers use this edition to familiarize themselves with this beloved book of the Bible. This devotional also helps readers deepen their understanding of the Christological aspect of the psalms and Luther's perspective on them. Open Reading the Psalms with Luther today for a fresh look at one of Luther's favorite Old Testament books.

Martin Luther

Martin Luther (1483 , 1546) was a German monk, a theologian and church reformer, he is considered to be the founder of Protestantism. Luther was a professor of Bible at the University of Wittenberg when he posted his famous 95 Theses (1517). In addition to writing many books, Luther translated the Bible into German. Luther believed that salvation was only by faith in Jesus , unmediated by the church. He challenged papal authority by emphasing the Bible as the only source of religious authority and believed the church to be a priesthood of all believers. These ideas helped to inspire the Protestant Reformation and changed the course of Western civilization. He married Katharina von Bora thus initiating the practice of clerical marriage within Protestantism.- Publisher.
