Reasons for Our Rhymes provides a fascinating chronological overview of the major philosophical approaches to human history. R. A. Herrera clearly presents the ideas and influence of key figures from the past two thousand years -- from St. Augustine and Joachim to Bossuet and Vico, from Hegel and Marx to Soloviev and Berdyaev -- showing how each of these thinkers initiated a new paradigm for our understanding of the meaning of history. In addition to introducing the most significant thinkers on the subject of history, Herrera also pursues the idea that changes in philosophy run parallel to changes in the concept of God. As the discussion moves from the patristic age to the Middle Ages, through the Renaissance and into the modern period, Herrera shows how each new interpretation of history has progressively transformed the God of the Scriptures first into the notion of "Providence" and then into the concept of "Progress."

How our conceptions of God and history have undergone change over the centuries, focusing on luminaries like Augustine, Vico, Hegel, Marx, Spengler, and Toynbee. There are cyclical, static, and pendulum views, those which assume human progress, and those that accept only a past golden age.
