Dr. Lloyd-Jones' exposition of Romans, the major work of his mid-week ministry in London, occupied him from 1955 until 1968. Throughout these years, no other event in the calendar of evangelicals was comparable to Friday night at Westminster Chapel. But the publication of such a massive series of sermons had no precedent in this century and there was therefore no promise of a consecutive series of volumes when his sermons from chapter 3 were printed in 1970. Since then, however, interest in this preaching through Paul's greatest Epistle has gripped a far larger number than those who first listened. With 9 volumes (from Romans chapter 1 to the end of 9) now issued, this present volume takes up the real starting point for the whole series. No New Testament Epistle is more foundational to the Christian faith than Romans, and no chapter in Romans more basic that its first chapter. To few chapters did Dr Lloyd-Jones give more thought or more emphasis. He viewed it as the supreme demonstration of the necessity for the gospel, the announcement of divine truths worthy of the attention of the whole world.

Born in Cardiff, Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899-1981) was a practicing physician until leaving medicine to become the minister of a Welsh Presbyterian Church.
Minister of Westminster Chapel and co-founder of both InterVarsity Fellowship and the Banner of Truth Trust, this brilliant Welshman was arguably the greatest evangelical preacher of the 20th century.
Best remembered for the power of his sermons in an age of spiritual decline and apathy, Dr Lloyd-Jones exercised his formidable intellect in the service of a thoroughly biblical faith, inspiring his contemporaries to think through the implications of their beliefs for both Church and world.
Dr Lloyd-Jones never tired of calling the Church to revival, to foundational doctrines and to a prayerful zeal for authentic apostolic experience. His rich legacy of recorded and published sermons continues to be used by God to transform lives today.
