Why do religious people not believe the gospel? What is involved in truly believing it? What about those who have never even heard the gospel?Who should tell them about it?This volume of sermons on Romans 10 provides answers to all these pressing questions. Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones regarded it as 'the greatest tragedy of all human history that God's own, chosen people should be the ones to reject the message of the gospel and that, on the other hand, the Gentiles, who were not a people and who were foolish and ignorant, should be the ones to come into the kingdom of God and into the Christian church.' 'If we fail to apply all this to ourselves and to our present situation,' Dr Lloyd-Jones declared, 'then we shall fall into the very error into which the Jews themselves had fallen The principles with regard to this whole question of salvation, of belief and unbelief, taught here by the Apostle, recur constantly in the whole history of the church and of the human race God's dealings with men and women are always the same'.Opposition to the gospel, he believed, always results from relying on tradition, turning back to human works and refusing to accept salvation as a free gift of God's grace. He therefore restated the glorious truth of justification by faith alone, opposing it to all confidence in human righteousness or merit, and defined the place of the preacher as the herald of the grace of god. The lessons to be learned from the experience of the Jews he believed included the need for humility and for openness to all that the Scriptures teach. Ultimately our hope is based on the un-changing purpose of God. He is not dependent on any people, even His own people. Whatever happens, God's purpose in history will be fulfilled. He will be glorified in a people saved by believing the gospel of His grace.

Martyn Lloyd-jones

Born in Cardiff, Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899-1981) was a practicing physician until leaving medicine to become the minister of a Welsh Presbyterian Church.
Minister of Westminster Chapel and co-founder of both InterVarsity Fellowship and the Banner of Truth Trust, this brilliant Welshman was arguably the greatest evangelical preacher of the 20th century.

Best remembered for the power of his sermons in an age of spiritual decline and apathy, Dr Lloyd-Jones exercised his formidable intellect in the service of a thoroughly biblical faith, inspiring his contemporaries to think through the implications of their beliefs for both Church and world.

Dr Lloyd-Jones never tired of calling the Church to revival, to foundational doctrines and to a prayerful zeal for authentic apostolic experience. His rich legacy of recorded and published sermons continues to be used by God to transform lives today.
