Samson tries to attack, but he is calmed by Maximilian Kolbe, a Catholic monk also interred at the camp. For Samson, all of this evil reaffirms his belief that there is no God.
Commondant Rudolf Hoss soon recognizes Samson as the 1936 Olympic Boxing Champion and pulls him aside. He offers Samson a deal. He can box for his life. The winner of each fight gets extra food, the loser goes to the Gas Chambers? and it's even worse for Samson -- if he loses, he will find himself on Mengele's experimental operating table.
The tale that ensues is a story of beauty amidst the horror and significance amidst the terror. Adding to the complexity is Samson's loss of faith and his slow renewal of that faith through his relationship with Kolbe. It is not an easy task. Here, he must find his faith while he witnesses the violent, tortured deaths of most of his friends and family.
The relationship with Dr. Mengele only worsens as time passes and Samson somehow stays alive in the ring each week. A historic battle ensues with Hitler, Himmler, H ss, and many of the highest ranking officials in the Nazi Party watching... this incredible fight culminates in Mengele himself getting in the ring with Samson.
