"Singleness of Heart is an invitation to explore the spiritual dividedness that infects the Christian heart. Writing for those who feel themselves being pulled in opposite directions spiritually, Clifford Williams probes spiritual dividedness to reveal the concealed and unacknowledged motives that undermine the search for inner peace." "Drawing judiciously on the work of writers like Augustine, Dostoevsky, Ernest Becker, Pascal, Tolstoy, Kierkegaard, and the Apostle Paul, Williams describes two kinds of spiritual dividedness: ambivalence, in which we are both attracted to and repelled from a given object, such as God's love; and illusion, in which the motive we think we are acting from differs from the actual motive. He also poses two avenues of spiritual restoration: being open to God's mercy and being involved in a community of grace." "A challenging but much-needed book for Christians across a broad spectrum - from laypersons and students to pastors and Christian philosophers - Singleness of Heart systematically yet gently searches the secret places of the Christian heart, taking readers beyond the cursory acquaintance they often have with their true selves and leading them to the healing power of God's grace and the "single-minded pursuit of eternity.""--BOOK JACKET. Charles Williams

Charles Williams (1886-1945) was an English writer who is best remembered for his works of Christian speculative and fantastical fiction, in which the contemporary world of everyday experience becomes open to encounters with the uncanny and the supernatural. Williams was also an accomplished poet, playwright, literary critic, and theologian. He was a key member of the circle of Oxford academics known as 'The Inklings', which included C S Lewis and J R R Tolkien. Williams' work was received enthusiastically by T S Eliot and W H Auden, but probably his greatest admirer was Lewis, upon whom he had a significant influence. Williams married his sweetheart Florence Conway in 1917, and they had one son, Michael. Williams was a devoted member of the Church of England, with a particular regard for doubters, whom he believed were an essential part of any church body.
