-Publisher

"The Hymns on the Lord's Supper, first published in 1745, remain the Wesleys' principal statement of their sacramental teaching and spirituality. These hymns, written early in Charles Wesley's career, were widely used in the eighteenth century; then they were forgotten. Attention was drawn to them in 1948 by E. H. Rattenbury, but nothing substantial has been written about them for more than half a century." "In this new introduction and exposition Daniel B. Stevick sets a background for Wesley's eucharistic thought, and discusses selected hymns, bringing out their theological themes, their range of experience, and their compressed drama. He gives attention to the relation of Charles Wesley's hymns to the essay with which they are "twinned," 'The Christian Sacrament and Sacrifice', written by the seventeenth century author, Daniel Brevint." "This book contends that Wesley's sacramental hymns remain not only a historical landmark, but also a profound, vigorously expressed, and permanently valuable presentation of the Supper of the Lord. It makes an almost forgotten but fundamentally important eighteenth century text accessible to twenty-first century readers."--BOOK JACKET.
