Thousands of years ago, the people of Israel began to gather their special books - their history, their stories, the songs that were sung in their temple and the sayings of their prophets. Then there came a new teacher, whose many followers believed he was a prophet: Jesus of Nazareth. People wrote accounts of his life, his teaching, his miracles, and of the new faith that was spreading through the world. Many centuries ago Christians added these new writings to that older collection of stories and poems, and so the Bible was born, the book of the Christian faith. Now Trevor Dennis combines scholarship and storytelling to retell the books of the Bible with originality and exuberance. Here is a Bible that everyone can enjoy: The Book of Books.
The great stories of the Old and New Testaments are best understood in the contexts in which they were shaped: contexts which help sift storytelling and history, poetry and prose, chronicle and commentary. Trevor Dennis is an academic theologian with a gift for storytelling. In this highly acclaimed Bible retelling, now available in a new format edition, he goes back to the roots of the biblical writings, bringing fresh insights into the familiar stories in his novelistic retelling. His aim to bring the stories of the Bible alive is achieved in a book which brims with verve, humour and originality, in a style that will appeal to readers of all ages.
