Though her life was difficult, Hannah Whitall Smith's message was joyful. In the Christian's Secret of a Happy Life, she writes that "Jesus came to save you fully now, in this life, from the power and dominion of sin, and to deliver you altogether." Passionate and practical, Whitall Smith's classic of the Holiness movement focuses not on human effort but on simple, stubborn faith in the Savior and Sanctifier of the soul.
"Our part is the trusting," she writes, "it is His to accomplish the results."
Hannah Whitall Smith (1832-1911) was a writer and evangelist, active in America and England. She did not have an easy life. Of her seven children, only three lived to adulthood. In spite of, and perhaps because of, her unhappy circumstances, she was able to advise Christians on how to find and keep the joy of the Lord in A Christian's Secret of a Happy Life, her widely read and much loved book of Christian Holiness theology. Constant themes in her writings include the assurance of salvation and freedom from anxiety, as she portrays the richness of God's love and His desire to relate to us as the perfect Parent, Savior, Protector, and Friend. Hannah was also active in the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. Her other books include The Open Secret, and The Commonsense Teaching of the Bible.
