In 1947 a Bedouin shepherd discovered a cave in the Judean Wilderness containing ancient scrolls which were older than 2,000 years. In the years to follow ten more caves and hundreds more scrolls were found. What are these scrolls and what significance and value do they have for understanding Judaism and Christianity?

This volume will introduce the story of the scrolls' discovery, provide an accessible discussion on interpretations of the archaeological site alongside the Dead Sea and outline the impact these scrolls have had on understanding ancient Jewish thought and practice and the origins of Christianity. This book will place an emphasis on the nuances of this last point and the previous points will establish a basis upon which to explore the meaning of the library. A substantial portion of the guide will be dedicated to explaining the present discussion on the scrolls-which has been transformed in the last decade-and how the very relevance and value of the scrolls has been reassessed. The implications of this re-evaluation will be highlighted throughout the volume.
