Charles Williams
Charles Williams (1886-1945) was an English writer who is best remembered for his works of Christian speculative and fantastical fiction, in which the contemporary world of everyday experience becomes open to encounters with the uncanny and the supernatural. Williams was also an accomplished poet, playwright, literary critic, and theologian. He was a key member of the circle of Oxford academics known as 'The Inklings', which included C S Lewis and J R R Tolkien. Williams' work was received enthusiastically by T S Eliot and W H Auden, but probably his greatest admirer was Lewis, upon whom he had a significant influence. Williams married his sweetheart Florence Conway in 1917, and they had one son, Michael. Williams was a devoted member of the Church of England, with a particular regard for doubters, whom he believed were an essential part of any church body.
