Simpson considered the expression "Fourfold Gospel" a gift from God to him. He told his New York parishioners, "I know not why the term 'Fourfold Gospel' should have been suggested by the Holy Spirit, but it seems to have been taken up all over the land...". It remains today as the watchword for the denomination he founded.
Simpson defined the "Fourfold Gospel" as Christ our Savior, Christ our Sanctifier, Christ our Healer and Christ our Coming King-an expression of the highest life.
Simpson was a major figure in American evangelicalism at the close of the 19th century. He founded a publishing house, edited a weekly magazine for more than 40 years, wrote over 100 books, pastored churches, raised up social minisitries, founded a college, wrote dozens of hymns and gospel songs and instituted the faith promise system. He also founded a denomination, The Christian and Missionary Alliance, which is known worldwide for its aggressive teaching, preaching, and churchplanting ministries in more than 50 countries.
