Hailed as perhaps the best commentary on any book of the Bible by an evangelical by Christianity Today when it was first published. Leon Morris' Gospel according to John has endured as a standard commentary on John, so much so that when the rewriting of the commentary was allocated to J. Ramsey Michaels, Dr Morris was given opportunity to revise his commentary.
This revised edition includes significant modifications and additions made in the light of recent writings on John's Gospel. While maintaining the same stance of his original work, Morris here references important secondary sources and studies that have appeared over the past two decades.
"The commentary proper is detailed, learned, discusses exegetical alternatives clearly, and locates Jesus in first century Judaism. This revised commentary is the evangelical counterpart to Barrett and Bultmann; it will be consulted much in the next generationand deservedly so."

"Preachers will fidn Morris' exegetical hints helpful inasmuch as they will lead to greater accuracy in expounding the text....The text of exposition can be read with profit by the average layperson....in the footnotes students of the word will find the most amazing and delightful array of material. It is a pleasure to recommend this perceptive and valuable treatment
Morris's revised study on the Gospel According to John is part of The New International Commentary on the New Testament. Prepared by some of the world's leading scholars, the series provides an exposition of the New Testament books that is thorough and fully abreast of modern scholarship yet faithful to the Scriptures as the infallible Word of God.
Recognizing the central importance of the Fourth Gospel in any series on the New Testament, Morris devoted more than ten years to preparing this volume. Written with considerable acumen and a thorough knowledge of the previous scholarly work on the Johannine text, The Gospel according to John is one of the largest and most comprehensive commentaries ever to come out of the evangelical community. This revised edition includes significant modifications and additions made in the light of more recent writings on John's Gospel. While maintaining substantially the same stance taken in his original work, Morris here references important secondary sources and studies that have appeared over the last two decades. The commentary is now also based on the New International Version.
Leon Lamb Morris was an Australian New Testament scholar. He received his Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge which became his first major book, The Apostolic Preaching of the Cross. He served as Warden of Tyndale House, Cambridge (1960-64); Principal of Ridley College in Melbourne, Australia (where they have named a library in his honour); and Visiting Professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.
He published numerous theological works and commentaries on the Bible, notable among which are The Atonement: Its Meaning and Significance, New Testament Theology, and The Gospel According to John and 1 and 2 Thessalonians (New International Commentary on the New Testament series) and The Gospel According to Matthew, and The Epistle to the Romans (Pillar Series). Morris was also the editor of the invaluable Tyndale Bible Commentary Series and the author of volumes on Luke, 1 Corinthians, 1 and 2 Thessalonians and Revelation.
