It's springtime in Bragg County and love is in the air. A church retreat allows beka to get to know Josh better, but she learns that even though she likes him, his college choice may put a wrench in their relationship. Confused about her relationship with Josh, Beka seeks out Mark for solace. When Mark tries getting physical with Beka, she ponders issues of purity.
As sixteen-year-old Beka struggles with her feelings about Josh, who is going away to college soon, and Mark, who wants a more physical relationship, Gretchen's threats take a terrifying turn and God does not seem to be paying attention.
As Beka's junior year winds to a close, Josh and Mark are both vying for her affections. Since Josh is going to college in Seattle in the fall it seems clear that Mark, a fellow junior, is her best chance for finally having a boyfriend. But with her dad's strict rules about spending time with guys, Beka's left frustrated and wondering if she'll ever have a boyfriend. But Beka has got other problems too. Her older brother will be heading off to college soon, and she's not sure she'll survive without him next year. Her dad is spending a lot of time with a woman Beka can't stand. And worst of all, Gretchen is being nice! Now that's confusing! Surely she hasn't forgotten it was Beka who told the police about her involvement with the fire at the Snack Shop before spring break, Beka knows it's only a matter of time before she tries to get revenge. If only Beka could open the Bible and have it spell out who she should date and what she should do about Gretchen, life would be so much easier! But, then again, maybe God does have something to say about the confusion of real life.
