If evolutionary theory is correct, what does that say about creator God?
^^Ever since the famous debate on Darwinism between Huxley and Wilberforce in 1860, there has been little real conversation between the scientific community and much of the Christian world. This book offers the prospect of reconciliation between what are seen as two opposing worldviews.
^^With remarkable insight and skill, Foster shows that most evolutionary theory and its consequences are easily reconciled with Christian orthodoxy and explores the ethical problems of natural selection in a fresh and invigorating way.
^^Charles Foster insists on getting to the heart of the topic and succeeds through a scientific and biblical analysis that is second to none. The Selfless Gene has the potential to become required reading for theologians and laypeople alike
In THE SELFLESS GENE, Charles Foster assesses the claims of Neo-Darwinists and Young Earth Creationists, demonstrating that orthodox Christianity is not incompatible with what evolutionary biology says about our world. The real issue, he argues, centres around the ethical implications of natural selection, and what such a system -- based on selfishness, waste and death -- might say about the loving creator God of the Christian faith. Intelligent, provocative and accessible, THE SELFLESS GENE offers the prospect of a reasoned dialogue between faith and scientific study, and a reconciliation of what are popularly seen as two opposing worldviews.
Charles Foster is a lawyer and part-time judge, and lectures in medical ethics at the University of Oxford. He is also an explorer, and in 2002 was a member of a successful British ski expedition to the North Pole. He is the author of Wired for God: The biology of spiritual experience (Hodder 2010); The Selfless Gene: Living with God and Darwin (Hodder 2009); Tracking the Ark of the Covenant (Monarch,2007); The Christmas Mystery (Authentic, 2007); and The Jesus Inquest: The case for - and against - the resurrection of the Christ (Monarch Press; 2007)
