The Sunburnt Circus

Jim Reiher

Paperback 2014-03-01

The Sunburnt Circus focuses on two brothers, aged 11 and 12, growing up in an Australian circus. The story covers a few months, during which three significant accidents occur. However, in each case a miraculous power intervenes. That miraculous power seems to be coming from the older brother, Simon.

During those same months, Simon is also having dreams and flashbacks of something that happened to him when he was very young. When he tries to talk to his parents about the dreams they appear disinterested, if not uncomfortable.

A third child, Olivia, is a part of the circus too. 14 year-old Olivia is an acrobat whose parents are the circus clowns. She is embarrassed by her parents' profession, and her relationship with them - especially with her father - is strained. Other members of the circus family (the rest of the crew), have their own stories woven around the main mysteries of the book.

While the reader attempts to guess what the fragmented dreams of Simon refer to, and what Simon's miraculous power really is, there are other puzzles and secrets to do with the motorcycle stunt riders, and others in the crew.

As more accidents happen, as the power intervenes, and as the fragmented dreams keep coming, the parents of the boys finally tell them the story of what happened when they were very young. All seems to be finally explained. But hold on to your hats: one more near fatal accident and a huge twist will change everything!
