The tremendous expansion of science and technology has raised a difficult ethical question for religious people: Given that the earth is God's creation, what legitimate uses does it have for human life and what form of ecological stewardship must we practice? Modern environmentalism often appeals to religious principles in order to protect biodiversity, wilderness, and the clean air, water, and soil required for a healthy life, for religion provides a basic piety toward all of creation as well as a reforming moral spirit that is rarely found elsewhere.
