Simply Christian is essential reading for anyone who wants to consider the real fundamentals of Christianity or is intrigued by its claims about the place of justice, beauty and love in our daily lives. Written in a lively and accessible style, though rooted in solid scholarship, this book describes the exciting relevance of the Bible and the Christian story for the contemporary world. 'I am very much impressed by the Bishop's book. He makes it absolutely fresh. He presents the case for Christianity as something new for the first time. It is enormously important especially in the UK where the Christian religion has virtually disappeared. It is absolutely wonderful, absolutely radical and very powerful' Professor Antony Flew, author of The Presumption of Atheism.
Simply Jesus: Who He Was, What He Did, Why It Matters
We begin with a thought experiment. Modern critical biblical scholarship often points out how the church's teachings about Jesus have become encrusted with tradition so that it is
hard to see what the core documents-the New Testament-really say about him. Now, with the insight of 200 years of modern critical scholarship and assuming an audience that includes both the well-churched and the non-churched, how should the church present the story and identity of the central personality of their faith, Jesus of Nazareth? Many people will be surprised at the story they hear.
Who was - and is - Jesus of Nazareth? This is a simple question that every Christian must ask. A multitude of different voices and centuries of church tradition have made it difficult for us to see Jesus the way his own contemporaries saw him, and to understand him in the way that he wanted to be understood. This book places Jesus firmly within his own context, and shows how startlingly relevant he is to our own day as well. In this book, renowned New Testament scholar Tom Wright sets out to answer three simple but vital questions about Jesus: who was he, what did he do and why does it matter? The Jesus we might discover if we really looked is larger, more radical and more urgent than we ever imagined. And when we recognize Jesus, our next challenge is to follow him in his project of bringing God's wise, healing rule to bear on his world.
Simply Good News: Why the Gospel is News and What Makes It Good
The Gospel means good news, but what makes it news? If the message has been around for 2,000 years, what could possibly be newsworthy about it? And what makes it good? Surely not the stories we hear of damnation, violence, and an angry God. Tom Wright believes many Christians have lost sight of what the 'good news' of the gospel really is. In Simply Good News, he shows how a first-century audience would have received the gospel message, what the 'good news' means for us today and how it can transform our lives.
