Wising Up provides rituals and guidance for aging women (mainly 65 and older) to help them make the often difficult transitions wisely and in the context of their faith communities. Instead of focusing exclusively on such time-worn thresholds as menopause, marriage and divorce, and dying, the book includes affirming rituals on coming to terms with: the changes in one's body (losing parts of one's body such as breasts, and living with a terminal disease such as MS or cancer); learning to live with and depend upon an item like a walker or a hearing aid; giving up one's driver's license; deciding how to give away one's household contents; and being orphaned. In addition to the rituals themselves, and guidelines on how to create one's own rituals, the book contains a number of short stories, hymns, prayers, quotations, works of art, and poetry women can turn to as yet another tool to help them through the aging process.
