Herman Roodenburg is Head of the Department of Ethnology at the Meertens Institute, Amsterdam, and Professor of Cultural History at the Catholic University of Leuven. His publications in English include, as a co-editor with Jan Bremmer, A Cultural History of Humour (1996), and The Eloquence of the Body: Studies on Gesture in the Dutch Republic (2004),
