With this work, Witvliet attempts to build bridges between theory and practice, among various worship-related disciplines, and across denominational lines. If worship renewal is to occur, each bridge must be formed. His hope is that this work will not only articulate questions about worship but also enrich the practice of worship in congregations today. Witvliet's broad scope and insightful advice will be welcomed by pastors, worship leaders, church leaders, and students.
John D, Witvliet (Ph.D., University of Notre Dame) is director of the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship and associate professor of music and worship at Calvin College and Calvin Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He also teaches in the religion department at Calvin College.
John Witvliet is the author of The Biblical Psalms in Christian Worship: A Brief Ecumenical Introduction and Guide to Resources (Eerdmans); Worship Seeking Understanding: Windows into Christian Practice (Baker Academic, 2003), and Dwelling with Philippians: A Conversation with Scripture through Image and Word (Eerdmans, 2010)
He serves as editor for two books series-the "Calvin Institute of Christian Worship Liturgical Studies Series" (Eerdmans) and "Vital Worship, Healthy Congregations" (Alban Institute)-as well as co-editor, with Pearl Shangkuan, of the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship Music Series (GIA).
