Surprisingly enjoyable read
5 stars By Nicole, Jul 11 2017
I was intrigued when I saw this book at Koorong. It sounded a bit like the Fox O'Hare series by Janet Evanovich and it mentioned similarities to the Stephanie Plum series on the cover. Serena did remind me of a combination of the two characters Kate O'Hare and Stephanie Plum, both created by Janet Evanovich. Serena is a FBI agent who recovers stolen art but has a crazy family including Aunt Martha and her mum, who constantly wants her to quit her job and get married. But Sandra Orchard hasn't just created fan fiction here - her series and character of Serena have their own merits and I look forward to particularly finding out where the focus on the grandfather's death will go in future novels. The writing was fun and playful and the storyline engaging. I wanted to keep reading to find out who was behind the thefts and like a good whodunnit there were plenty of red herrings. The possible love interests in her life were intriguing. I was also pleased with the integration of Christianity. Sandra Orchard has created a realistic and believable storyline with a character who is obviously a Christian as she attends church, prays and says grace before meals etc. but her faith is lived out in a way that seems more believable than some other examples of Christian fiction. Overall I was quite impressed with this novel and look forward to reading the others in the series.
