A very personal approach
3 stars By Lauren Watt, Jun 15 2016
I have had a mixed reaction to this book. This was due in part to my desire for a book of mainly biblical analysis of prayer to apply to my life, but a praying life is more about the role of prayer in the Author's life. The book specifically addresses people hurt by unanswered prayer, stuck in formality of prayer or who may have never learned the value of prayer. Therefore while chapters spoke to specific weaknesses in my prayer life, other sections were less helpful.
The best parts of this book were some really great analysis of current worldviews and how they affect our praying. I was a bit disappointed by the lack of scriptures throughout the book. At the end of the book there is a fantastic chapter on how Millar prays, full of biblical reference, and it would have been great to see more of that reflected through the rest of the book. A few times I had trouble following the logic of Millar's arguments and a very few times I thought he may have been a little cavalier in his approach to biblical stories. For example, the circumstances surrounding Jesus birth.
However, despite some of the issues I had reading the book, it gave my prayer life a boost and brought some fresh insights to prayer.

Refreshing and inspirational
5 stars By Rachel Morgan, May 20 2015
Every now and then I read a book that has a significant impact and leaves a lasting impression on my life. This is one such book and my life is all the better for reading it!
Let's face it, prayer is hard! Who doesn't struggle with this central part of the Christian life in one way or another? How often do we find ourselves wishing our prayer lives were more vibrant then they actually are? Paul Miller seeks to address these difficulties from a really refreshing perspective; as a Father to a seriously disabled daughter he draws from real struggles and deep questions and speaks with raw honesty, biblical truth and practical wisdom. You are left inspired to pray - not out of a sense of duty or feeling of guilt, but from a spirit of poverty hungry for a deeper connectedness with God. "Learned desperation is at the heart of a praying life." p 117. My understanding about prayer was deepened as I considered it less as a discipline I have to work harder at, and more of a lifeline that keeps my faith alive.

Prayer help found
5 stars By Joel Radford, May 26 2013
This book is now my 'go to' book on prayer. Paul Miller teaches the reader not only how to pray but gives great encouragement to pray. The chapter tackling our cynicism toward prayer is brilliant. If you need encouragement to pray, this book provides it in spades.

If prayer is a chore, read this book
5 stars By Rob, Aug 02 2012
Kevin DeYoung called this 'the book on prayer that actually makes you want to pray' and he is so right. It is neither a survey of prayers in the New Testament (for that in Paul's prayers, try Carson's A Call to Spiritual Reformation) nor a collection of other people's prayers (for that, Banner of Truth publishes 'Valley of Vision'). Instead it describes Millers own experiences of prayer, and the result is that anyone who reads this book will go away with both a new understanding of prayer and a desire to do it. Some of the diagrams in the book will stick with you for a long time and you will find useful in all sorts of contexts. Miller comes across as genuine and humble and his passion for and dependence on God in prayer is apprent on every page.

A balanced and engaging read
5 stars By Helen, Jul 30 2011
I found this book to be a fantastic balance between helpful anecdotes and biblical reflection, all steeped in reality. Miller's transparency about his own life and family give a context that is easy to relate to. He comes across as an ordinary person who has heard and learned about how to authentically live life, with all its problems and complexity, in communion with God who is weaving his story in his life and the lives of those he prays for. He speaks of beauty and poetry in seeing God at work, but his writing is not in the clouds - there is plenty there for the serious Bible student as well as the ordinary person just trying to manage everday life.
