Geoffrey Blainey, one of Australia's most accomplished and popular historians, takes us on a journey from the very beginnings of Christianity through to the current day. Looking at the development of the religion itself, as well the social and economic forces that have influenced it, this book will include biographical detail of many of the significant players in Christianity's rise and fall through the ages, including Francis of Assisi, Wesley, Whitefield and Bunyan. Written with Blainey's characteristic curiosity and story-telling skill, The History of Christianity reveals the impact Christianity has had on our spiritual beliefs and on the most significant events in our social and political history, and shows us how it grew to become a faith adopted in so many corners of the world.

For 2000 years, Christianity has had a varying but immense influence on world history.  Who better, then, than Geoffrey Blainey, author of the best-selling Short History of the World and one of Australia's most accomplished historians, to bring us a history of this world-changing religion.
A Short History of Christianity vividly describes many of the significant players in the religion's rise and fall through the ages, from Jesus himself to Francis of Assisi, Martin Luther, Francis Xavier, John Wesley and even the Beatles, who claimed to be 'more popular than Jesus'.  Blainey takes us into the world of the mainstream worshippers - the housewives, the stonemasons - and traces the rise of the critics of Christ and his followers.
Eminently readable, and written with Blainey's characteristic curiosity and story-telling skill, this book often places Christianity at the centre of world history.  Will it remain near the centre?  Blainey points out again and again that its history is a much-repeated story of ups and downs.

Readable
5 stars By Julie, Apr 27 2015
If you have never had the chance to study church history, I thoroughly recommend Blainey's book. Though the book is about 550 pages, the print is a reasonable size, there is adequate space between the lines, the chapters have sub-headings and most importantly you will want to turn the pages. I found dipping into the breadth of Christianity through the ages in all its major forms such as Catholicism, Protestantism and Orthodoxy as well as many of the more minor forms to be refreshing and informative. From the early church through the 20th century, including the negative periods such as the crusades, Blainey is mostly even-handed and realistic in his attitudes and opinions. In his conclusion, Blainey wonders at the influence of Christ and despite the rise of atheism and Islam, predicts Christianity will continue and that, as in the past, will come out much more on the positive side than the negative. Grab this book and read it if you get a chance.

2nd Prize 2012 Australian Christian Book of the Year
5 stars By 2012 Australian Christian Book of the Year judges, Aug 12 2013
A consummate storyteller takes on the greatest story ever told. Blainey deftly weaves together epic events, developments and movements. He pauses, when instructive, to examine sometimes obscure episodes and people. The result is a simple yet breathtaking narrative. Blainey's impartiality is especially evident in his treatment of major conflicts, such as the Reformation. It is significant that in an increasingly Christophobic society, a prominent historian at the peak of his prestige has written an accessible history that places Jesus at the centre of human history.
