Epic journey
5 stars By Hannah, Jan 14 2017
This book was an epic adventure from start to end! Part allegory, part fantasy, part romance, it had me captivated all the way to the last page. I love the journey the characters were taken on as they chose at each crossroad - be it literally or figuratively - which path to take from the real world at the beginning to the fantasy world they're transported into. Would recommend it for anyone who enjoys fantasy and doesn't mind the threat of a few giants every now and then.

Powerful science-fiction allegory
4 stars By Karl, Dec 22 2012
This is book blends fantasy, science fiction and romance together in an allegorical tale filled with action and interesting perspectives on old ideas. The story begins when Callie, an amazing protagist, signs up for a psychological study, and before she knows it she finds herself alone in the mysterious Arena, with minimal knowledge and supplies, armed only with a few instructions and a guidebook. The world of Arena is wonderfully described and brought to life by Karen Hancock, and we view the struggles and trials of Callie as she and other participants fight for survival while they search for the exit that is supposedly easy to find. Much like Narnia you can either just read this as any other great book, getting lost in the adventure and the details of an alternate world, or if you choose you can additionally take in the allegory appreciate the book on another level.
