Essential reading
5 stars By Kieran Carr, Dec 05 2016
In Biblical Preaching, Haddon Robinson argues for the expository style of sermon for the first 15 pages of his book (6%); for the rest he outlines ten thorough and practical steps on how to prepare an expository sermon. By quoting various Scriptures, he argues that 'preaching stands as the event through which God works' :

'When you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it actually is, the word of God' (1 Thess 2.13).

Although each of the ten steps is important, steps three (Discovering the Exegetical Idea), four (Analysing the Exegetical Idea), and five (Formulating the Homiletical Idea) are what distinguishes Robinson's approach. These three steps are aimed at whittling the sermon down into a sharp and memorable sentence which communicates the 'big idea' of the passage to the congregation. The reason this is so helpful is because it sharpens the preachers thinking and makes clear communication without confusion more likely.

The section which explains the three different types of sermons (Deductive, Inductive, Inductive-Deductive), is very useful. Part of why this section is helpful is because it equips the preacher to match the type of sermon they preach with the type of passage they are preaching. Practicing these different types of sermons add variety and creativity to the weekly sermon.

Useful guide for technique
4 stars By Hoa, May 03 2016
Robinson has provided a useful beginning guide to preaching. He covers fundamental aspects such as exegesis, structure and delivery. In particular, he gives good coverage of how to effectively use illustrations, and vocal control. His strong emphasis on wrestling with a passage until the main point is clear is also invaluable. Robinson strikes a good balance between detail, and brevity, making the length suitable for a beginning preacher.

Unfortunately, Robinson is quite light on providing a foundational theology for preaching, and unlike other introductory volumes, including an absence of discussion of preaching Christ from all of Scripture.

This is a helpful book, leaning more towards technique, but should be supplemented by another to provide a firm foundation in theology of preaching, which should take precedence over technique.
