Can your brain force you to sin?
4 stars By Ming, Dec 28 2007
In a day and age where people are increasingly seen as helpless victims of their genetic/biological make up, books like these are very precious. Are people ultimately not responsible for their behaviour, since it's really their brains that made them do it? How can anyone still maintain that homosexuality is a sin, since the 'latest research' indicates that there are specific genes/brain areas that influence the development of homosexuality?

This book thoughtfully and lovingly addresses these very issues, without beating around the bush. Welch tackles a handful of major psychological problems (eg. alzheimers, depression), outlining what role the brain does play, while not ignoring the natural sinful inclination of the human heart. Welch argues that brain defects/deficiencies *cannot* make us sin - rather, they may expose the sin that's already there in our hearts by removing our ability to hide them as easily. One day, my aged brain may be damaged, but any sinful behaviour that proceeds cannot simply be excused. Our need for a saviour remains.

Welch has taken grey matter and made it black and white (pun intended), and for that, this book is invaluable, and worth your time.
