Books and Chronicles in Jewish Tradition (Journal For The Study Of The Old Testament Supplement Series)

Isaac Kalimi

$165.00

Hardback
Isaac Kalimi reveals the history and influence of the Books of Chronicles from the earliest sources until the beginning of critical biblical scholarship in the nineteenth century some 2,000 years later. This is the first comprehensive research on Chronicles primarily devoted to `reception-history' (Rezeptionsgeschichte) or `impact-history' (Wirkungsgeschichte). It focuses on the utilization of Chronicles in Jewish societies through the generations, and highlights the attitudes and bias of writers, translators, historians, artists, exegetes, theologians and philosophers towards the books. Kalimi examines the book's influence on literature and art and its role in the religious beliefs and practices of Judaism. He provides a convenient means of access to the variety of literary sources and material on Chronicles, which until now has been unavailable.

- Publisher Isaac Kalimi reveals the history of the Book of Chronicles from the earliest times (as far as the sources allow) until the beginning of critical biblical scholarship at the dawn of the nineteenth century. This comprehensive examination focuses, first and foremost, on the utilization of Chronicles in Jewish societies through the generations, and highlights the attitudes and bias of writers, translators, historians, artists, exegetes, theologians and philosophers towards the books. The reader is made aware of what the biblical text has meant and what it has 'accomplished' in the many contexts in which it has been presented.
