Mission Driven
3 stars By Sharon, Mar 31 2013
This star cricketer who played in the original ashes test became a driven missionary after his conversion in the 1880s. After starting off in China, where he met his highly motivated missionary wife, he headed to "deepest, darkest Africa" as it was known at the time. He was determined to reach the hardest people groups, including cannibals, despite his poor health. The Worldwide Evangelization Crusade was founded by Studd as a result, supported by his wife and other family members whom he often held at arms length for the cause he held so dear.

I would like to say I was greatly encouraged by this testimony, but must confess that this book, whilst very engaging and well written, left my family and I feeling appropriately exhorted to avoid making ministry an idol. It was encouraging to read about Studd's determination and bravery, willingness to suffer and sacrifice, yet it became evident that in later life his focus moved to doggedly pragmatic missionary service and his love of the brethren suffered as a consequence. Not my favourite book from the excellent authors Geoff and Janet Benge, nevertheless masterfully handled. I recommend this only for mature young readers who have understanding and or have wise counsel to help them work through this challenging and sometimes confusing account of the founding of the WEC mission organisation.
