Christians Get Depressed Too

Christians Get Depressed Too

$16.99

Paperback

Many Christians mistakenly believe that true Christians don't get depressed, and this misconception heaps additional pain and guilt onto Christians who are suffering from mental and emotional distress. Author David P. Murray comes to the defense of depressed Christians, asserting that Christians do get depressed! He explains why and how Christians should study depression, what depression is, and the approaches caregivers, pastors, and churches can take to help those who are suffering from it. With clarity and wise biblical insight, Dr. Murray offers help and hope to those suffering from depression, the family members and friends who care for them, and pastors ministering to these wounded members of their flock.

In this short book, Murray sheds sensible, biblical light on depression, giving hope to Christian sufferers and carers of those suffering. Murray commends medical treatment where appropriate and helps readers to understand and handle their mental health from a biblical perspective. Must-read for everyone.

Help for the Depressed and Their Carers
5 stars By Ronald Nugent, Jul 14 2012
As a pastor and as one who suffers depression, I have sometimes been asked if I can recommend a good Christian book on depression. Until now I have said that I do not know one. Now, at last, I have found one. It is "Christians Get Depressed Too" by David Murray and published by Reformation Heritage Books. David Murray was a pastor in Scotland before becoming Professor of Old Testament and Practical Theology at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The book is brief, cheap, and clear. Best of all, though, Murray is balanced and biblical, avoiding the extremes of the so-called biblical counselling movement, which sees depression as simply the result of sin, on the one hand, and of the purely medical model, which sees depression as simply an organic problem of the brain, on the other. He recognises that depression can be complex with many causes and that wisdom is needed in diagnosing the causes and advising appropriate treatment. Following in the steps of the English Puritans (he quotes William Perkins and Richard Baxter) and their successors (he quotes Jonathan Edwards, CH Spurgeon and Martyn Lloyd-Jones), Murray helpfully distinguishes endogenous depression (what the older writers called "melancholia") from spiritual and psychological depression, and gives wise counsel for addressing each. This is the book I would have liked to write; Murray says just what I think needs to be said. It is an excellent book to give to those suffering depression, to family members and friends of depressed persons, and to pastors and elders. I am going to buy several copies to give away to others.

Real help for those afflicted with this malady
5 stars By Trevor Hunt, Nov 19 2010
Depressed? get this book and get real help!
David Murray has written the most balanced understanding of this subject that I have read. It's only 112 pages but the grace & wisdon here is a balm to the troubled soul.
Don't understand depressed people? You need to read this book to gain an insight into ministering to those afflicted.
