Meet the Authors

Matthew Henry

Matthew Henry (1662-1714), was born into a committed Puritan family and followed his father's footsteps into full-time ministry, being ordained as a Presbyterian pastor in 1687. Despite ill health, deep bereavement, and the demands of his pastoral duties, Henry produced many devotional and scholarly works. They remain popular three centuries after his death, especially his classic commentary on the whole Bible.

George Whitefield

1714-1770

Alexander Maclaren

Alexander Maclaren (1826-1910) has been known for gen erations as the prince of preachers. He was born in Scotland and lived much of his life in England. His abilities to dissect a passage and to use analogies from nature and life have long been imitated. His sermons reveal his passion, spiritual insight, and intellectual power.

Essential For Everyone
5 stars By Eric, Jan 28 2017
I couldn't find this book in store so I had to buy it sight unseen online because I was so enamoured with Alexander Maclaren's exposition of "ye are the salt of the earth" that I read online. Wow, what a book! Don't let the title fool you into thinking this is just a resource for preachers - this book is more than just a book of "sermon outlines" (which are often bullet points for sermon writers to follow on a range of topics). This book contains short sermons by great preachers of the past and it's so edifying to read these sermons from yesteryears. These preachers didn't compromise in their gospel message and their sermons are so powerful because of this. Whether you are a budding sermon writer yourself, interested in preachers of yesteryear or want a book you can turn to should you find a sermon you listened to at church lacklustre, this book is hands down essential for every Christian to have on their bookshelf. I earnestly wish this book could be promoted in store for more people to glance at and I would give it six stars if I could. If you find a copy in store, open it and you will buy it. If you're shopping online and read this review, add it to your basket, you can thank me later when your soul is nourished by these great sermons.
