Helpful but narrow focus on philosophy of biblical counselling
4 stars By MatthewT, Mar 04 2016
The contributors to the book set out to help the reader better understand why biblical counselling is a vital ministry in the local church.
They present reasons why the church must be rescued from the popularity of Christian counselling which incorporates secular psychology, and minimises or even excludes Scripture from the process.
The book addresses the historical backgrounds, key people, theological foundations, and practice in the local church.

They demonstrate a significant confidence in the Word of God as sufficient. The substantial use and study of Scripture throughout the book was helpful to see what God's Word teaches and reveals about itself and its ability to help people change.
It was also helpful to consider issues in the light of the doctrine of sin. They made a good case about the pervasiveness of sin affecting the choices of individuals and the influence this has in counselling.

The book contained some but minimal case studies or examples of the difference between a biblical counselling approach and a Christian counselling approach which is incorporating secular psychology.
Also, discussion around the potential usefulness of aspects of psychology is limited. It was quick to write off all uses of psychology but didn't address how some specialist study areas of psychology could be useful.
End notes, rather than footnotes, made checking references inefficient.

Overall, helpful but narrow. Focused on philosophy rather than practice.
