Great story!
4 stars By Donna who loves to read!, Jul 04 2016
I had never read any Lisa Harris books before, but I loaded this book onto my e-reader from the Koorong site. I really enjoyed reading this book!

The main character, Avery was interesting and believable, struggling with things that many of us struggle with. Juggling commitments to work, family, church and dealing with grief. It was nice to have a little romance weaved through the story, but not over the top.

The action and suspense in this story were great. I didn't find it predictable, it kept me guessing right through to the end. I did feel like there were a few loose ends at the end of the story, but maybe that continues on into the next book?

The story had me hooked and I had to keep reading to find out who was responsible and what was going to happen. I'm so glad to find a new author that I like, and I look forward to reading the next books in the series!

Dangerous Passage
5 stars By Narelle Atkins , Dec 16 2013
I really enjoyed reading Dangerous Passage and I was drawn into the story from the opening chapter. Avery is tryng to relax by having a pedicure, and you just know something big is about to go wrong to disrupt her idyllic day off. Avery is a fascinating and multi-dimensional character who has survived a lot of hardship and loss. She is a devoted single mother to her young daughter, Tess, and she juggles the responsibilities of motherhood, extended family dramas and a demanding job.

Avery and Jackson have started dating at the beginning of the book. A realistic and tender romance develops between Avery and Jackson, who each have their own issues and fears to face in the story. I liked how we see Jackson's caring and protective side emerge as Avery encounters dangerous situations.

The suspense plot is exciting and gritty, with lots of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end. The book doesn't shy away from dealing with the unspeakable horrors associated with human trafficking. There is also an intruiguing series mystery element in the story that carries over into the next book. I highly recommend Dangerous Passage to those looking for an exciting and fast paced romantic suspense story.

I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author.

A okay read
3 stars By Jessica R. Wakefield, Dec 01 2013
This book is right up my alley - contemporary, suspense, romance, mystery, a bit of action - what's not to like? There was stuff to like and stuff to leave with this book. It was good but not great. It took a while to get going, I was about 40% through it when it started to pick up pace and get really interesting. For the most part, in the first half of the book, there is a lot going on (almost too much at times) and I feel exhausted for Avery with such a heavy workfamily life. The workload of her life leaves her so burdened with everything that it got in the way of really liking her as a character. There was no room for her to breathe and thus I felt I didn't know her really. Plus, the woman on the book cover kept reminding me of the actress Christina Ricci and that just seemed to be a stumbling block for me for most of the book!

Avery's family is a little confusing (too many people) and her work colleagues suffer from the same problem. Her relationship with Jackson though was nice. I liked how the book started with these two already interested in each other, having been on one date. It made their budding romance more real. I liked the struggle they had, especially Avery with figuring out how to put Jackson in her already too full life and did she really want him there? These two came across as real busy people, wanting to make a relationship work. I found them to be a nice touch in the book and would have liked more time for them to hang out etc. But with Avery so busy, that didn't really happen either.

As for the mystery, when the book finally picked up pace, so did the mystery and from about 40% onwards I raced through the book, wanting to know how it would end and was happy with the ending.

So overall, whilst not a great book, it will please many fans of the Christian, suspense genre.

Exciting Romantic Suspense
5 stars By Iola, Oct 17 2013
Atlanta Detective Avery North has just been called in from her day off to investigate a murder. The victim was a young Asian female with a magnolia tattoo, similar to a recent unsolved crime, and Avery is motivated to solve this murder before another girl suffers the same fate.

She is assisted by her partner, Mitch, and by Jackson Bryant, the associate medical examiner for the force. Avery and Jackson have recently started dating- he's the first man she's had more than one date with since her husband died three years ago, leaving her with a daughter. Avery also has family issues. Her father has recently retired from the police force, her brother was murdered on the job four months earlier, and his killer is still at large. She struggles to balance the competing demands of God, family, a full-time job and now dating, and this felt very real.

This is the first book in the new Southern Crimes series, and I'll certainly be keen to read more in the series. It's got everything I look for in Christian romantic suspense: intelligent and likeable yet imperfect characters, a strong plot with plenty of suspense and a developing romantic subplot, good writing, and an underlying Christian theme. It's dealing with some big issues-modern slavery-but manages to do it without getting too graphic. Recommended.
