Deception on Stable Hill (#01 in The Chicago World's Fair Mystery Series)

Shelley Shepard Gray

The World's Fair has introduced many new ideas to Chicago society-but can two individuals from very different backgrounds find love together?

It's mid-September 1893 and Eloisa Carstairs is the reigning debutant of Gilded Age Chicago society. To outsiders she appears to have it all. But Eloisa is living with a dark secret. Several months ago, she endured a horrible assault at the hands of Douglass Sloane, heir to one of Chicago's wealthiest families. Fearing the loss of her reputation, Eloisa confided in only one friend. That is, until she meets Detective Sean Ryan at a high-society ball.

Sean is on the fringes of the Chicago elite. Born into a poor Irish family, becoming a policeman was his best opportunity to ensure his future security. Despite social boundaries, he is enamored with Eloisa Carstairs. Sean will do anything to keep her safe-even if he can never earn her affections.

Eloisa longs to feel normal again, but a killer is on the loose. In the last month, three debutants have been accosted by an assailant wielding a knife, and Eloisa fears for her safety at every event she attends. As the danger in the city increases, and as the romance between Eloisa and Sean blossoms, they both realize they want to be seen as more than how the world views them. But will they catch the killer before all their hopes come crashing down?

Interesting and Engaging Story
4 stars By sarah, Sep 11 2015
Another un-missable novel by Shelley Gray! I was pleased to find she had written another non-amish novel. She is a talented author and needed to break out of the amish fiction genre and capture a wider audience of readers.

The novel is well written and explores the taboo subject of sexual assault in a historical time period where reputation was everything and altered the course of life completely. This is definetly not meant for young readers, only adult readers due to elements of the novel that some may find distressing. It was a unique storyline compared to other fiction offerings, and held my interest throughout the novel. Recommended for fans of historical fiction and mystery fiction.

Excellent
5 stars By Iola, Jun 27 2015
Deception on Sable Hill shouldn't have worked. While it's entirely believable that Mrs Carstairs was so self-absorbed that she didn't notice the anguish Eloisa was going through, it's much less likely that she didn't notice Eloisa spending far too much time with that police detective. It would be unusual for a lady of Eloisa Carstairs's station to spend time with an Irish police detective under normal circumstances ... but this is a novel, and Eloisa's circumstances are hardly normal.

Maybe it shouldn't have worked, but it did, and that's a testament to Shelley Gray's consistently excellent characterisation and strong writing, Even if logic says the plot shouldn't work, Gray managed to convince me it did, and I was swept up in a romantic suspense novel set against the backdrop of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair (a popular topic, it seems: Deeanne Gist is also writing a series set in and around the Fair). Recommended for those who like historical romance ... especially historical romance with a mysterysuspense twist.
