The most important questions anyone can ask are: Why was Jesus Christ crucified? Why did he suffer so much? What has this to do with me? Finally, who sent him to his death? The answer to the last question is that God did. Jesus was God's Son. The suffering was unsurpassed, but the whole message of the Bible leads to this answer.

The central issue of Jesus' death is not the cause, but the meaning - God's meaning. That is what this book is about. John Piper has gathered from the New Testament fifty reasons. Not fifty causes, but fifty purposes - in answer to the most important question that each of us must face: What did God achieve for sinners like us in sending his Son to die?

Meet the Author

John Piper

John Stephen Piper was born 11 January 1946 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Bill and Ruth Piper. The Pipers soon moved to Greenville, South Carolina, where John spent his growing-up years. His father was an itinerant evangelist who also ministered through international radio and Bible courses. John has written a tribute to his mother, who died in 1974, in the booklet, What's the Difference (Crossway Books, 1990) which is also chapter one of the book, Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (Crossway Books, 1991).

At Wheaton College (1964-68), John majored in Literature and minored in Philosophy. Studying Romantic Literature with Clyde Kilby stimulated the poetic side of his nature and today he regularly writes poems to celebrate special family occasions and rich, biblical truths. At Wheaton John also met Noel Henry whom he married in 1968.

Following college, John completed a Bachelor of Divinity degree at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California (1968-71). While at Fuller, John discovered the writings of Jonathan Edwards.

John did his doctoral work in New Testament Studies at the University of Munich, Munich, West Germany (1971-74). His dissertation, Love Your Enemies, was published by Cambridge University Press and Baker Book House (and is now available through Crossway). Upon completion of his doctorate, he went on to teach Biblical Studies at Bethel College in St. Paul, Minnesota for six years (1974-80).

In 1980, sensing an irresistible call to preach, John became the senior pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he ministered for 33 years, until 2013. Together with his people, John was dedicated to spreading a passion for the supremacy of God in all things for the joy of all peoples through Jesus Christ - a mission he continues now for the wider church through the ministry of desiringGod.org. John says of his ministry:
"The ministry of preaching is the central labor of my life. My prayer is that through that ministry and everything else I do the great glory of our God and Savior Jesus Christ would be magnified as more and more people come to live out the obedience of faith more and more deeply."

John is the author of over 50 books and now frequently travels to speak, and writes regularly, through Desiring God.

John and Noel have four sons, a daughter, and twelve grandchildren.

Theologically-Rich Devotional
5 stars By MatthewT, Aug 31 2016
This brief, yet theologically rich book by Piper offers devotions in very brief (most around two pages), readable chapters.

Unlike other devotionals, this doesn't contain long stories or anecdotes. Rather, a Bible verse or two is laid out then unpacked by Piper with implications for how Christ's life, death and resurrection impact Christians.
Because Piper is covering 50 areas, the implications are broad. Each of the chapters could be used as a springboard for further study as well.

This is a easy reading, valuable resource to understand a great breadth of theological implications of the work of Christ.

Solid Biblical Book
5 stars By Julz, Feb 01 2013
I love Piper's books because they are biblical and deep and this one is no exception. I particularly like this one because it expounds the meaning of Christ' death for us, the different aspects of our salvation, i.e. justification, sanctification, redemption, adoption, reconciliation. This is a good book for believers and non believers.

Brief readings suitable for groups
3 stars By Liz P, Oct 23 2012
Piper examines Scripture and comes up with fifty reasons for the death of Christ which he examines in two pages each.

The chapters were to the point and, obviously, brief and so handy to pick up for a few minutes and put down again. They also could be handy for family or classroom devotions.

As a book to sit and read, however, I felt it was a bit dry. Due to the breadth of the topic and the brevity of the book, none of the reasons are examined in depth which makes the book difficult to engage with. It would, perhaps, be better suited to a new Christian, especially if it was read at one chapter a day as part of a personal devotional time.

I would be happy to use it in family devotions or our home schooling, but I wouldn't recommend it as a book to read.

Amazing truth explained and simply understood
5 stars By Lynette, Oct 25 2010
I have both the audio and paperback of Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came To Die and believe the audio book is even better than reading the book itself because you are hearing it read, and the powerful message is getting into your memory. In short 4-6 minute messages on 50 statements of why Jesus came to die [and it is only a selection of reasons Jesus came to die], I've found incredible depth of revelation from easy to listen to chapters - it is so deep yet so easy to understand. I highly recommend this audio book to every believer to keep [I often listen as I drive] but I feel you need a second copy you can lend to others and a book to keep in your handbag etc.. I've listened to the audio version 4 times now and some chapters up to 10 times and it brings home the truths and gets into your memory for easy recall. Great for listening while driving and on an MP3 player. I highly recommend both the book and the audio to everyone, new or seasoned believers. It will give a firm foundation for faith in Jesus death and just what He's provided for us through His death.

Amazing Truth explained - a must have book
5 stars By Lynette, Oct 25 2010
I have both the paperback and audio of Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came To Die and believe this book is the most important book in my library besides my Bibles. In short 2 page messages on 50 statements of why Jesus came to die [and this is only a selection of reasons Jesus came to die], I've found incredible depth of revelation from easy and quick to read chapters - it is so deep yet so easy to understand. I highly recommend this book to every believer to keep on their bookshelves [I've got a copy in my handbag - great when waiting for appointments] but I feel you need a second copy you can lend to others. I've listened to the audio version 4 times now and some chapters up to 10 times and it brings home the truths and gets into your memory for easy recall. Great for listening in the car and on an MP3 player. I highly recommend both the book and the audio to everyone, new or seasoned believers.
